AVERT Members attend the public hearing for the parliamentary inquiry into right-wing extremist movements in Australia
On 17 June 2024, the authors of the AVERT submission to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee inquiry into right-wing extremist movements in Australia gave evidence at the public hearing to further assist in the inquiry.
The public hearing provided an opportunity for AVERT Members to respond to questions from the committee, and to share their expertise on right-wing movements in Australia.
In her opening remarks AVERT Convener Lydia Khalil told the committee:
Right wing extremism (RWE) is best understood as a spectrum of socio-political movements and one that is increasingly complex, fragmented and eclectic… Broadly speaking, RWE movements and ideologies share an 'anti-democratic opposition to equality. They reject democratic governance and use, or justify the use of violence, to affect societal and political change. Over the past two decade we have witnessed a rise in right wing extremism and far right actors and movements that have had significant impact on Australia and around the world.
