Legacies of 9/11: AVERT announces 25th anniversary event series

To mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the AVERT Research Network is presenting Legacies of 9/11: 25 Years of Changing Global Security — a week-long series of panel discussions running Monday 7 to Friday 11 September 2026.

Each day is co-hosted with a different partner organisation and looks at how the terrorist threat landscape has evolved over the past quarter century, from counter-terrorism and online extremism to policing, Islamophobia, and the broader lessons of the past 25 years.

Programme

  • Monday 7 September — Counter-Terrorism and Evolving Terrorism Threats, with the Research School of Social Sciences, ANU
  • Tuesday 8 September — Digital Frontlines: Online Extremism and Prevention Since 9/11, with Moonshot
  • Wednesday 9 September — From 9/11 to Now: Policing and Intelligence in a Changing Threat Landscape, with Macquarie University
  • Thursday 10 September — Beyond 9/11: Global Muslim Diasporas, Evolving Challenges, and New Paths Forward, with the Institute for Strategic Dialogue
  • Friday 11 September — 25 Years On: Lessons and Legacies of 9/11, hosted by AVERT (hybrid, Deakin Downtown)

Each session is separately hosted and requires its own registration. Full programme details, speaker biographies, and registration links for every session are available on the event page. Recordings of each session will also be made available afterwards for anyone unable to attend live.
