Democracy, Dissent and Countering Violent Extremism

The counterterrorism and countering violent extremism frameworks of many democracies were established in the immediate post-9/11 context. Today, democracies face additional challenges: increasing polarisation, declining trust in institutions, and growing adherence to anti-government conspiracies. The 2023 symposium engaged with the latest research on the role of P/CVE policies and programs in responding to these evolving dynamics.

Donatella della Porta is Professor of Political Science, Dean of the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, and Director of the PhD program at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Florence. She leads the Center on Social Movement Studies and researches social movements, political violence, and terrorism.
