About Michele

Professor Michele Grossman AM earned her PhD at Monash University and is Research Chair in Cultural Diversity and Community Resilience at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, where she is also Director of the Centre for Resilient and Inclusive Societies (CRIS) and Convenor Emeritus of the AVERT Research Network.

Michele's research focuses primarily on engaging communities in preventing and countering violent extremism, building resilience to violent extremism, and understanding different dimensions of radicalisation to violence pathways in varying cultural contexts. Her ground-breaking research project series on community reporting thresholds for sharing concerns about someone close who may be radicalising to violence, piloted in Australia, has been replicated in the UK, Canada and the USA through funding by CREST, Public Safety Canada and the US National Institute of Justice.

Michele partners closely in her research with government agencies and community organisations. She is Associate Editor of Terrorism and Political Violence and an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism.

She holds a wide range of current or recent advisory roles in her areas of expertise for both government and academia including National Policing Counter-Terrorism Headquarters (NCPTHQ) and the Commonwealth CVE Secretariat (UK), Hedayah (Abu Dhabi), the Building Resilience against Violent Extremism (BRaVE) project (Horizon 2020), the Editorial Advisory Board of the Extreme Beliefs book series for the ERC/Vrije Universiteit Extreme Beliefs project, and, in Australia, the Dept. of Home Affairs, Dept. of Justice and Community Safety Victoria, and Victoria Police.

Michele is a past Robert Schuman (Distinguished Scholar) Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. Widely published, her current research includes a project focused on rural-regional communities and CVE in Australia (Dept. of Home Affairs CVE Centre of Excellence for Research, Risk Assessment and Training) and an Australian Research Council Discovery Project on grievance-fuelled violence led by Deakin University. In 2023, she was made a Member of Australia (AM) in the King’s Birthday Honours List.
